A Quick Reality Check for Indie Filmmakers Navigating Today’s Market

In the indie world, creators get approached all the time with “quick deals”: sudden offers, fast‑track promises, special screenings, special events, or claims that someone can pitch your documentary or series directly to a major streaming platform. These offers sound exciting, especially when everyone is trying to keep income steady, but it’s important to understand how the industry actually works.

When it comes to major platforms like Netflix, there are a few realities that never change. Netflix does not accept unsolicited pitches. They don’t pick up micro‑budget doc series, and that applies to any niche series, not just monster‑hunter or paranormal content. They only work with established production companies that use union crews, meet strict deliverable requirements, and have verified legal clearances. And no matter what someone claims, random individuals or small companies cannot pitch your film to Netflix. That’s simply not how the system operates.

On the other side, there are also a lot of “opportunities” floating around that promise exposure, premieres, or special events. Some are legitimate promotional showcases, but many are paid appearances or marketing packages dressed up as career breakthroughs. They’re not necessarily scams, but they’re not distribution, either. And they can easily pull a filmmaker off course if they’re chasing quick wins instead of long‑term strategy.

Independent distribution is a delicate process. Recutting films, self‑uploading, making side deals, or jumping on sudden offers can unintentionally disrupt platform eligibility, destabilize release schedules, reduce payouts, or create conflicting versions of your work. Even small changes can have big effects.

The safest path is simple: let your distributor handle the business side. A distributor understands platform requirements, contracts, deliverables, and market conditions. They know which opportunities are real, which ones are risky, and which ones can actually help your film grow.

There are no shortcuts in this industry; only strategies that work, and offers that sound good but don’t lead anywhere. Stay focused, stay cautious, and let the distribution process do its job.

MUTV March Uptime Report

MUTV maintained near‑100% uptime throughout August, with only a couple of very short restarts during routine maintenance. Across all sessions, the stream delivered over 45 days worth of broadcast time, keeping our 24/7 paranormal and cryptid programming running smoothly around the clock.

MUTV continues to be a stable part of our catalog, providing a steady flow of viewers every day. Even though the ad revenue is small, the stream helps support our book sales and long‑form content, and even one or two extra book purchases a month make a meaningful difference.

*On Amazon (US), our overall watch minutes were down when compared to the previous month. This month, there were over 22 total watch hours. The overall watch time on Amazon is down from previous years, but no doubt it is due to the growth of free-to-watch services. So, the watch hours are holding fairly steady on Amazon. Amazon changed its Slate (self-publishing Platform) and, at this time, they are not accepting new account setups in the U.S., the UK, Germany & Austria, or Japan. Amazon is an important service for all filmmakers. Zombie Media will continue to present titles to Amazon to help ensure the success of filmmakers. In fact, we reach Amazon services and territories that were never available through Slate.

Mysteries Unlimited TV - This 24/7 live channel is a project of Zombie Media. We are proud to announce that our clients received payouts from the service. Our hope is to continue to grow the channel, and that payouts will increase for everyone. MUTV officially launched in early November. We have new content that will be added in the near future.

A Behind the Scenes Look at Zombie Media

As we close out 2023, we thought it would be good to highlight a little more about our company. A kind of behind-the-scenes look at some of the inner workings of the company. There are probably a lot of things that you don't know, and this is a way of letting you know. We also understand that there are many unsavory characters in the distribution/entertainment field. This can lead people to think all in the field are shady and cause clients to question even the good companies. We understand and get it. So that is another reason we wanted to kind of deep dive into our company.  

Each month we pay out thousands of dollars to our clients. In the event a client only has a small amount for the month, that amount is held over until the next month. In the distribution and publishing arena, royalties can fluctuate from month to month. Sometimes this fluctuation is due to the reporting schedule of streaming services. Some services pay monthly, some quarterly, and some depend on the dollar amount. Reports for books are a lot more consistent. 

There are some areas in which Zombie Media excels that most do not even know about, so we thought we would share some info. 

Many times, when a film has underperformed for the month, we don't even take out our percentage or we knock our percentage fee in half and pass the funds on to our client. Being in the filmmaking business ourselves, we understand the difficulties in creating a film and trying to recoup/make money. So sometimes a little human compassion and understanding is needed.

Here is a list of other things we do to help out our clients.

* IMDb Listing - If a film is not listed on the IMDb, we add it to the site. We do not charge our clients for this service.

* Artwork - We create artwork for books and films at no charge to our clients. We also work to make sure film artwork passes quality control, which can be somewhat difficult at times. Again, at no charge to our clients. Sometimes we purchase graphics or hire an artist for projects, this is paid by Zombie Media and the client does not get charged and the money is NOT normally recouped out of a client's royalties. 

* Film Captions - Most streaming services require a movie to have captions. We get these made for films that do not have them. We pay for this service and cut the exact amount out of future royalties of the client over several months. This results in zero upfront cost to the client. We also translate captions into other languages for free for our clients. Having captions in other languages gives a film a much wider appeal to non-English speaking territories. Having bad captions will cause a film to fail quality control. 

* Film Editing - Many times we fix minor issues with films, again at zero charge to our clients. We also fix audio issues. For example, a recent film had an unusual "pop" sound in the audio, which would cause the film to fail quality control and not be available to services. We fixed that, for free, and the film passed quality control. Other companies would charge the client a large sum to do these things, we don't.

* Book Editing - We also do minor editing on books. Sometimes it may be as simple as a misspelled word, or a punctuation left out. We sometimes have to do much more work on the layout of a book. We do this to ensure that pictures and chapters fall where they should and are not on the wrong pages. Example: we currently have well over 15 hours of work into a future book release to ensure it is as near perfect as it can be. This is done at ZERO charge to our client. This is all in-housework done for free for our client.

* Marketing/Promoting - We promote films/books on our website, Facebook page, X (Twitter) page, YouTube Channel, Personal Facebook page, other social media platforms, and on other websites. We also run some Facebook ads, Zombie Media pays for this out of our part of royalties. ALL at NO charge to our clients. Sometimes we even set up podcast appearances or help clients appear at events.  

Make sure to follow all of our pages and share posts. 

* Other Help - We also offer numerous tips and info on our official pages. Things like "Self-promoting and Marketing" and "Captions or Subtitles" informative posts. Promotional videos to help with marketing. Monthly updates to show top-performing titles. Again, all at No Charge to our clients.

* Funding - Sometimes, Zombie Media will help with funding of projects, the amounts we can contribute vary. We sometimes even help with titles that we are not even distributing, why? Because we want people to succeed, and we support filmmakers and authors.  

This is not all that we do to help our clients but hopefully you can see that we are much more than just a publishing/distribution company. We do our best to help a book or film be successful. Of course, not all books or films will be runaway hits, but we still put forth the effort to make it a success. The market is tough. There are tons of films/books out there all competing to get viewed or read. There are numerous streaming services with varying pay structure. All this factors into the overall success of a project. 

We hope you can see the benefit with signing and working with Zombie Media. We work hard. Some may be discouraged or feel down that their project is not performing well, but don't be. We have seen projects not do so well and then take off a year or two later. You just have to keep marketing and promoting and reaching new customers/viewers. You build a viewership/readership with each project, which helps ensure future success of the next project.

We have some exciting news to share with everyone! Recently several films that are published and distributed by us, Zombie Media, was selected to appear on the newly energized PLEX Streaming service. In case you didn't know, Plex is a global streaming media service that is poised for even more growth and a bigger market share.

 

In fact, Plex recently raised $50 million in growth equity to expand its services into rentals, ad supported streaming, purchases and subscriptions. This growth and equity will make Plex a strong competitor in the streaming market. We are Zombie Media are happy to be onboard in their growth plans and we are excited to have many of our films selected for inclusion on the service.

With this signing ZMP will be able to bring a culture, a history and it's stories to an American audience and beyond. There are many fascinating stories just waiting to be told and shared.

But this is more than just a simple film distribution agreement, it is a way for ZMP publishing to expand our services on a global level.

Currently, there are several films already done but need some final touches before hitting streaming services and DVD here in the USA. Things like artwork, captions and other simple, but time consuming, touches to bring the film to market.

One title is currently available on DVD and, barring any set backs, should start appearing on various streaming services in the near future. Some titles will be hitting BlackstarTV very soon and others in the coming weeks.

Currently available on DVD - The East Atlantis River Adventures - This documentary style film should appeal to those who like myths, legends and history.

Synopsis -

The 460 plus mile long Musi River, sometimes called Gold River, was the heart of Palembang especially during the 7th to 13th century Srivijayan empire. Many of the locals still depend on the river in many ways. The river also attracts treasure hunters who dive and sift for lost artifacts made of gold, silver and bronze. It is also home to numerous myths and legends such as the white crocodile.

There are several other titles that should make it out in early 2021. 

ZMP is also happy to be taking a small part in an upcoming event in Indonesia. The event is slated for December 19th. 2020. While ZMP was unable to attend in person, we will be there in a virtual video.

A global partnership that will bring exciting new content to a new audience is a very big win for all involved. 

While building upon our growth and success in 2020, and now our agreement with Baliwood, 2021 is shaping up to be a great year for ZMP.

BlackStarTV has Launched!

Zombie Media Publishing is please to announce that BlackStarTV is now live! BlackStarTV is a new and very affordable streaming service. If you don't want to commit to a monthly charge you can just rent the titles you want to watch. The service offers different rental prices and even a special 99 cent rental category. But the best way to get the most out of the service is with the small monthly subscription of $3.99

At this time the amount of titles and films are low, but that is changing fast as many new and classic titles are waiting to be uploaded to the service! There will be many extras for some films, that you can not get anywhere else.

We experienced a slight set back when we first started working on this streaming service and had to totally start over with another platform provider. This slight set back is why we felt the need to go ahead and launch the service. We have a fair amount of money invested in the project and once we had to reboot we felt the pinch, so to speak. Launching the service now, even with a sparse selection, should generate some revenue to help offset our hiccup at the first. Also, the hiccup was no fault of Zombie Media or BlackstarTV, it was a coding issues with the original platform. An issue that we waited to be fixed for over a month and once the support stopped replying to our questions, we had to cut our loses and move on. 

What is exciting about BlackStarTV is that it also gives us, Zombie Media, our own streaming service that will help us promote our current clients and it should help us land more clients. All the while providing customers an affordable service with a wide variety of  films and extras.
